January 2008 Archives

January 1, 2008

Happy 2008 everyone!

We hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season.

One of our many New Year's resolutions this year is to blog more. We'll see how long that actually lasts, but I'm going to give it my all.

As it stands I've been submerged in sports and will continue to be through January.

Most of you know that I'm working on the staff of Rotojunkie.com coming up with the projections for our fantasy baseball product called The Fix. I'll be focusing the majority of my attention on that for the next couple of weeks.

I've also starting the process of learning about hockey. Some of the wonderful people over on the Dallas Stars forum on thescoreboards.com have been "educating" me on the ins and outs of the sport and I have to admit that I really like it.

The Cowboys are limping into the playoffs, but I'm still extremely excited about attending my first over post season event for any sport. More on the Cowboys in the coming days.

As I type this I am watching the USC Trojans absolutely dominate Illinois. What a pathetic showing for the "Fighting Illini".

Later tonight is the Sugar Bowl where Clay's UGA Bulldogs will take on undefeated Hawaii. I'm going to DVR that one and watch it later tonight or tomorrow as Anji and I are going to watch a movie or two.

We'll give you updates on those when we can.

I think that's me in a nutshell right now.

Productive day...

Today I was able to finish the entire Cincinnati Reds roster for The Fix at Rotojunkie.com. Click that link for the Atlanta Braves projection sheet I did.

Also, the Cowboys lost their scouting director who was hired to be the GM of the Miami Dolphins.

Anji and I just finished watching "The Simpsons Movie". I've never really watched The Simpsons before, but I thought it was pretty funny.

I'm also getting into the hockey a little bit and have had some great education from the wonderful people over at the Dallas Stars forum on TheScoreBoards. Sadly, the Stars have lost both games that I've watched closely.

That's about it for tonight. Tomorrow morning I'll be working on the Houston Astros projections for Rotojunkie and doing some house cleaning.

Have a happy Thursday!

Stars lose/Bad Movie/Less Productive

I've been following the Stars for 3 games now. They've lost all 3. Wouldn't it figure. I'm actually really getting into it thus far though. It's pretty exciting once you figure out what the hell is going on and I have a great core of teachers over at TSB.

Currently, I'm watching the Kansas/Virginia Tech game hoping that VTech loses so I can keep from placing dead last in a Bowl Pick Em contest.

We watched Driving Lessons tonight. The movie with Rupert Grint who plays Ron Weasley in the Harry Potter movies. It was weird and less than good.

Tomorrow I get to pick the movie and I think I want to go see Juno at Movie Tavern near my house.

I also will be attending my first Dallas Stars game on the 22nd of January and hopefully two Cowboys playoff games before then, so it'll be a busy sports month.

I think that's about it for now. Hope everyone is having a happy new year!

Alive...

...thanks to everyone who sent the emails and messages stating they were sorry about my Cowboys. It's much appreciated.

I'll be back tomorrow hopefully with a proper update because I'm lying in the bed and the laptop battery is about to die.

You'll get the full story that include me almost brawling! I kid you not...

Rent is closing.

Nine hundred thirty thousand, one hundred eighty minutes.

That’s how you measure the total running time “Rent” will have played on Broadway when, as the producers said on Tuesday, it closes after its evening performance on June 1, making it the seventh-longest-running Broadway show in history.

Sweeney Saturday

This past Saturday was a Sweeney fest. The stage show in Dallas for a matinée and then the film in the evening. Slashing!

Delayed thoughts from the weekend...

Baby Boom
Friday January 18th

Well, this isn't a film that has held up through the years. I'm sure the intent was to show that working women could have it all, but it sure didn't play that way in 2008. (Side note: I accidentally typed 2998 instead of 2008- it's kind of mind-blowing to think how much a typo alters the meaning of things. I mean, fast-forwarding 900 years is more or less similar to rewinding 900 years, at least in terms of how different things would be- and the world in 1108 was terribly primative. Imagine if archaeologists in 2998 used Baby Boom as representation of life in the 20th and 21st centuries. Terrible, and not just the clothes). Regardless, I couldn't believe the JC character just walked out with her tail between her legs when they constructively dismissed her by dint of material change of job duties. They more or less said they were making her a partner! Call the EEOC- gender discrimination! Take the whole damned company down! This was so far from empowering. Plus, what was with showing her nervous twitch every time she was playing with the big boys in the boardroom? Why can't she just be competent? WHAT'S WRONG WITH COMPETENT? Also, the weepy thing- unacceptable. Becoming a mother doesn't make you weepy. Perhaps hormones or post-partum depression might, but ADOPTION would be accompanied by neither. Ugh. I sentence this movie to the garbage bin.

Who are you and what did you do to my husband?
Saturday January 19th

Maybe the alien ship that was seen passing over Stephenville, Texas did more than just provide fodder for MUFON to discuss, because, after today, I really wonder if my husband has been replaced by a clone of some variety.

We went to see a matinee of the national tour of Sweeney Todd at the Majestic Theatre in Dallas. Yes, we actually went to a show for which we had tickets. Then, without going home to check email, we went out to dinner. We did stop in at home briefly after that, but only to pause and go right back out to the movies to see... Sweeney Todd. TWO outings in one day... I know, right?? As Sweeney Todd drew to a close around 10:00 and we were bundled up to go out to the car (okay, I was bundled, not "we". It was 29 degrees!) Stephen asks if we should just go back in and buy tickets to see Juno, which was starting in 5 minutes. So we turned around and saw another movie. That makes 3 in the last year, two of which were in this outing. Weird! Fun day, but really very odd!

Atonement

We continued our quest to see all of the Oscar nominated films last night with a trip to see ATONEMENT.

I enjoyed the film though you could tell that it was just one of those stories in which the book was probably much better.

Rather than type out a review - which I can never be counted on to do consistently, I'll just post some quick thoughts.

-Loved the cinematography. There is one continuous sweeping shot of English soldiers on the beach waiting to be evacuated that justified an Oscar nod all by itself. It was one of the best single, uninterrupted shots that I've seen since the opening sequence of BOOGIE NIGHTS. I'm looking forward to seeing if the other nominees in this category can match up.

-Loved the score. There were moments with the sound of a typewriter were interjected into the score that worked very well.

-I felt like James McAvoy would have been a better nominee for Best Actor than Viggo Mortenson was for EASTERN PROMISES.

-While Saoirse Ronan was good in this movie, I would have really liked to have seen either Allison Janney or Jennifer Garner get the nod for JUNO instead. I just felt that her performance was way too one note - even for a kid actor.

-Keira Knightley was stunning as always.

-It's been a while since a big movie like this glorified how pretty people love to smoke. I realize it was as much to do with the time than anything - but there seemed to be a cigarette in every scene.

Weight Watchers

Since moving to Texas - I've ballooned all the way back to my all time high after losing a good amount the first go round.

I tried Atkins for a while and it was working for me, but I need more variety to stay interested.

So...Anji and I both signed up for the WW online thing today and have started. I posted my loss via updates on here before and that helped motivate me so I might as well do it again.

Birthday/Yumm-O

Thanks to everyone who sent me a birthday wish yesterday. I really appreciate it.

To those of you who didn't - screw you! ;)

I had a very nice birthday.

We went to this really cool fondue restaurant called "The Melting Pot" with Todd and Brooke - our new friends who live across the street. I even had a cocktail - oh yeah...the anxiety is going way here in Big T, folks.

I also had a great time starting an exercise routine by walking their dog Kona on 3 separate occasions. I really had a blast doing that and hope to do it often as a way to get into decent enough shape to hit the gym.

For my birthday Anji got me something that I've been wanting for a while. The Rachael Ray Stainless Steel Cookware set a new dinnerware set. Very nice!

I'm hoping to break it in later tonight or tomorrow when I cook some Orange breaded chicken.

Tonight I have my first real Fantasy Baseball mock draft of the year in which I'll be representing Rotojunkie against some of the known fantasy baseball people around the net. Exciting stuff!

That's about all on this end. Hope everyone has had a great weekend.
