Caffeine Detox = Wondeful Nights of Sleep

Okay, I'm in day 5 of absolutely no caffeine and while I am generally feeling absolutely craptastic during the days, I am getting some pretty amazing nights of sleep. I think I'll like this quite a bit once I'm at least a week through the process.

I also got a tetanus shot this week which made me a little ill and coupled with the caffeine detox pretty much made me a zombie Tuesday & Wednesday.

I'm starting to feel a bit better now though and I hope to be able to shift from Caffeine detox to the majority of carb detox very soon.

Thanks and update...

Thanks everyone for all the warm wishes that you've emailed and sent our way. We're extremely excited about this and looking forward to all the ups and downs of parenthood.

We are aware that there are some problems with the commenting on the site and we're hoping to get that addressed.

Jessica, who has been helping me out with website stuff for the better part of 12 years now, is in the process of putting together a site specifically for the baby news and I'm hoping to have her take a look at the commenting issues here as well.

Keep checking back regularly as I'm hoping to really try updating at least once a day. Yes - I know you've heard this promise before, but we're really going to do it this time. :-P

"Penelope" (2008)

We've actually been renting movies a lot lately and last night we had to return some and because of the deal we get at "Family Video" I was able to rent 7 movies last night for less than $9 bucks.

We'll see how many of them actually get watched given that this weekend is The Dark Knight and Mamma Mia mania, but we did watch one last night.

Synopsis from IMDB: Many years ago, the Wilhern family's maid got pregnant from the son of her master, but he is not allowed to marry her because she would not be "one of their kind". The woman commits suicide and her witch mother curses the daughters of the family that would have the face of a pig until one of them finds true love with one who will love her faithfully. Penelope Wilhern is the first legitimate girl after generations and born with nose of pig. Her mother Jessica hides her from the world in the Wilhern mansion, and Penelope is raised alone, with no friends. When she becomes a young woman, her parents try to find a wealthy bachelor to marry her and break the curse. Meanwhile the tabloid reporter Lemon and the aristocrat Edward Humphrey Vanderman III that have issues against the Wilhern family hire the gambler Max to meet Penelope and take a picture of her. But their scheme does not work as planned.

I'm not going to blather on and on about a review because I'll never do that consistently. Bottom line for me is that while this movie had some great messages, they often got buried in a film that didn't quite know if it wanted ot be a fairy tale or a social commentary on self worth. The greatest fairy tales have the ability to mix a nice social commentary and "lesson" into it's whimsical world. At times, "Penelope" seemed schizophrenic rather than a cohesive story that could have been very charming.

I enjoyed it, but after it went off I found myself focusing more on what was wrong about it rather than what was right and that isn't typically how I process movies.

I cautiously recommend it.

The Ruins (2008)

IMDB Description: While on vacation in a resort in Mexico, the Americans Jeff, his girlfriend Amy, her best friend Stacy and her boyfriend Eric befriend the German Mathias in the swimming pool. Mathias invites the group to visit the ruins of a Mayan temple with his Greek friend Dimitri in an archeological field where his brother Henrich and his girlfriend are camped eighteen kilometers far from the resort. They hire an old taxi and when they reach the spot, they are surrounded by Mayan villagers armed of revolver, rifle and bow-and-arrow that kill Dimitri and do not allow the group to leave the place. They climb a construction covered of creepers with red flowers, and remain under siege of the locals. When they hear a cell phone in the bottom of a well, Mathias decides to seek the apparatus using a rope that breaks and he has a serious accident breaking his back. Amy and Stacy go to the bottom of the mine to rescue Mathias and they find many corpses covered by the climbing plants; further, they realize that they had been lured by the plants that are vibrating with the sound of a cell phone. When they are attacked by the carnivorous creeping plants, they understand the reaction of the Mayan villagers.

To borrow a nice Gene Shalit-esque saying, "This "Ruined" by morning." Honestly, it wasn't a terrible monster movie, but it was just really flat. There was no build up, no twist and no surprises. It was obvious what was going to happen before it did and I wasn't able to feel for the characters at all due to not being able to relate to them at all.

I can't recommend it to anyone except the parents of the actors involved...and even then, it's borderline.

Superhero Movie (2008)

I'm not even going to bother linking to Amazon for this one because NO ONE should spend any money on this crap fest. The most unfunny comedy that I can remember in along, long time. I wouldn't recommend this to anyone.

Batman: Gotham Knight (2008)

Product Description: Acclaimed screenwriters including David Goyer (Batman Begins) Josh Olson (A History of Violence) and Alan Burnett (Batman The Animated Series) join forces with revered animation filmmakers on six spellbinding chapters chronicling Batman s transition from novice crimefighter to Dark Knight. These globe-spanning adventures pit Batman against the fearsome Scarecrow the freakish Killer Croc and the unerring marksman Deadshot. Using an arsenal of high-tech gadgetry from Wayne Industries Batman s ethical boundaries exist only where he chooses to place them leaving some fearful of his power. The sharp storytelling complemented by stylish art from some of the world s most visionary animators masterfully depicts the blurred lines of Batman as man myth and legend.Format: BLU-RAY DISC Genre: CHILDREN/FAMILY Rating: PG-13

I watched Gotham Knight today in anticipation for heading to the theatre tonight to see The Dark Knight (look for a review sometime tomorrow). Gotham Knight was really well done and the stories were extremely faithful to what I consider to be the "real" Batman stories from the 80s. My only complaint is I would have liked a slightly more linear storyline rather than 6 separate mini-movies, but it did stay very faithful and fall within the Christopher Nolan vision of Gotham.

If you're a die hard Batman fan then go ahead and buy this (like you haven't already). If you're a casual fan, I'd probably recommend renting it instead. If you hated Batman Begins because it was neon enough and there were no nipples on the bat-suit...stay far, far away.

The Dark Knight (2008)

Description: Set within a year after the events of Batman Begins, Batman, Lieutenant James Gordon, and new district attorney Harvey Dent successfully begin to round up the criminals that plague Gotham City until a mysterious and sadistic criminal mastermind known only as the Joker appears in Gotham, creating a new wave of chaos. Batman's struggle against the Joker becomes deeply personal, forcing him to "confront everything he believes" and improve his technology to stop him. A love triangle develops between Bruce Wayne, Dent and Rachel Dawes.

What can I say that hasn't been better said by reviewers all over the world. The Dark Knight is even better than Batman Begins, it's the best comic book movie of all time and it's very likely the film to see in order to see the winner for Best Support Actor at the Academy Awards next year. (Ledger as the Joker).

Has the film gotten a lot of hype as a result of Ledger's death? Probably. Does the film live up to it? Absolutely.

I recommend this to teens and adults but caution parents who might be taking their young children to see this. This is NOT Joel Schumacher's Batman.

General Updates

Given that I've been posting so many movie reviews and not much else I figure I should post a real update.

All is well around here. Anji is feeling better and we've pretty much told everyone about the pregnancy. A special thank you to Deb for the card she sent. It was very sweet!

As far as new baby stuff that we've come across - I highly recommend the Rockabye Baby! CDs where they take popular rock bands like The Beatles, U2, No Doubt etc and make Lullaby style music for babies. The music is really well done and we picked up a couple on iTunes.

We went to pick up the crib today only to find that the packaging was gigantic and we have to go rent a pickup truck to get it home. Anji has a paper due tomorrow night so we decided to wait on that. Our little fetus does have a mattress though! ;)

Mamma No

Well, we went to see Mamma Mia today with Brooke, her Mom and Alison and we got there at about 1:30 for a 1:55 screening only to find that it was sold out. MAMMA MIA was sold out in Texas! I'm guessing it's pretty effing chilly down in Hell right now. ;)

The amusing thing is that The Dark Knight was still selling tickets for the 1:45 showing at 1:40. Of course, the fact that The Dark Knight was in a 1200 seat theatre and had showing every 15 minutes compared to Mamma Mia being in a 350 seat theatre might have had something to do with it.

Nonetheless, I found it highly amusing!

Rite of Passage: The Crib!

In every television show or movie about people expecting a baby there is always the "Daddy Building a Crib" scene. I was a little concerned about that as Anji is our designated furniture builder. I'm typically not very good at that stuff. Fortunately, I decided to give it a go and see what I could do.

It was relatively easily and the crib is built!

One-hundred-effin-5 degrees!

Anji: "Dude, it's one-hundred-effin-5 degrees!"
Stephen: Don't you mean one-hundred and 5 effin degrees?
Anji: No, it's the 5 that bothers me. Not the degrees.

WebbBaby & WebbPage can compliment one another...

I've received a few emails asking if webbpage.org is going away since Webbbaby.org has launched.

The short answer is - "Not right now." It's always possible that they'll get merged though.

WebbBaby was created simply to serve as a pregnancy update for people who may not care to read about the baby stuff. Of course - since it's obviously our single focus at the moment, there will be some bleed over.

What do you think we should do?

When did THIS happen?!?
