We've actually been renting movies a lot lately and last night we had to return some and because of the deal we get at "Family Video" I was able to rent 7 movies last night for less than $9 bucks.
We'll see how many of them actually get watched given that this weekend is The Dark Knight and Mamma Mia mania, but we did watch one last night.
Synopsis from IMDB: Many years ago, the Wilhern family's maid got pregnant from the son of her master, but he is not allowed to marry her because she would not be "one of their kind". The woman commits suicide and her witch mother curses the daughters of the family that would have the face of a pig until one of them finds true love with one who will love her faithfully. Penelope Wilhern is the first legitimate girl after generations and born with nose of pig. Her mother Jessica hides her from the world in the Wilhern mansion, and Penelope is raised alone, with no friends. When she becomes a young woman, her parents try to find a wealthy bachelor to marry her and break the curse. Meanwhile the tabloid reporter Lemon and the aristocrat Edward Humphrey Vanderman III that have issues against the Wilhern family hire the gambler Max to meet Penelope and take a picture of her. But their scheme does not work as planned.

I'm not going to blather on and on about a review because I'll never do that consistently. Bottom line for me is that while this movie had some great messages, they often got buried in a film that didn't quite know if it wanted ot be a fairy tale or a social commentary on self worth. The greatest fairy tales have the ability to mix a nice social commentary and "lesson" into it's whimsical world. At times, "Penelope" seemed schizophrenic rather than a cohesive story that could have been very charming.
I enjoyed it, but after it went off I found myself focusing more on what was wrong about it rather than what was right and that isn't typically how I process movies.
I cautiously recommend it.
