Grandmother

The reason that I haven't updated the blog much this week is because I have been in Georgia.

Last Sunday afternoon my grandmother past away. She and I were always very close and this was a day that I have dreaded for a long time.

I am doing pretty well - all things considered. It helps that despite not knowing exactly what I believe religiously that I do believe that my grandmother is now in a better place. A place that has her parents, my grandfather and her friends. A place that she has both of her legs again and can walk around freely trying on even more close at whatever clothing stores they may have in the afterlife. A place where she can see well again - and see everything that she's been missing for so long. A place where love and happiness is constant.

I will miss her dearly, but to some extent I am happy for her.

I will be returning for LA on Sunday afternoon and then to work on Monday. That's all to discuss right now, although there could be a lot more soon enought. Check back.

Staples Center Clearance Sale

There was an AMAZING sale at the Staples Center this weekend - and no I don't mean the potential Shaq to Miami deal.

Apparently, every year the Team LA store at the Staples Center has a clerance sale of all of their merchandise from the previous season. Anji and I had nothing to do on Saturday so we decided to go down there. I had very low expectations of the event and figured that it would serve primarily as a "time killer."

Boy was I wrong.

Let me start off by saying that I spent a total of $70. Here is what I got:

- Gary Payton Minneapolis Lakers throwback jersey made of terry cloth (Normally $85. Today $20.00)

- Suede Kobe Bryant Jersey (4X) that I am going to use as a wall hanging. (Normally $175.00, Today $5.00 yeah, Five Bucks)

- Three Lakers caps. MPLS, Purple Los Angeles, and Lakers Trucker Cap. ($25.00 each sticker price. $5.00)

- Throwback 1957 Logo TShirt with Stitched Lettering (Sticker: $32.00. Paid: $5.00)

- 0.4 "One Lucky Shot Deserves Another Tshirt" from DFish's game winning shot against the Spurs. (Sticker $25.00. Paid: $3.00)

- Black Headband with Lakers logo. (Sticker: $9.00. Paid: $3.00)

- Two Lakers throw pillows (Sticker: $20.00 each Paid: $10.00)

- Three little lapel pins (Sticker: $5.00. Paid: $.25)

I was thrilled to add even more to my exisiting Lakers collection and the reason for that could be exposed in an upcoming blog. ;)

Sick and tired of being sick and tired.

For the past couple of weeks I have been really blah and weak. I missed a couple of days of work last week because of it. This weekend I really took it easy and just sort of hung out aroudn the house (except for an awesome sale at the Staples Center that I will tell you about in a later post.)

It worked wonders. I feel energized, ready to take on the week and the challenges of the upcoming move. (Which I will tell you about in a later post.)

So for those of you who knew that I was sick - and were a little concerned - worry not, I am feeling better!

The John-John Ticket

This is the ticket that I have wanted since primary season began. I think John Kerry and John Edwards balance each other very well and this was easily the most formidable ticket to take on the Bush Administration (regime) in October.

Edwards is an excellent campaigner, very likeable, southern and has a "real guy" feel about him.

His campaign message of 'Two Americas' was one that I really embraced and the only reason I wanted Kerry as the nominee over Edwards was experience.

Edwards should match up brilliantly in debate with Cheney in October.

While I am not insanely liberal - I am a southern democract - I find this ticket to be very appealing.

The only negative thing I can say about the announcement is that I think Kerry should have drawn it out a little bit more. This will inevitably boost him in the polls for the interim, but I think if he had waited to just a bit closer to the DNC it could have possible dragged out interest. Of course, the fact that Kerry made the announcement without Edwards by his side should help make up for some of that because we are now waiting to see them together, hear Edwards speak etc...

It's also possible that the announcement was excellerated in an attempt to overshadow the media coverage of Kerry's recent quote on abortion. He stated over the weekend that he believes "life starts at conception" which started up the Pro-Life spin machine.

I am sure we'll hear about that statement again in the future, but for now, Kerry Edwards (The John John Ticket) is story #1 in the political universe.

This was a nice thing to hear this morning. KerryEdwards04!

Yahoo! News - Army Recalling Thousands Who Left Service

Army Recalling Thousands Who Left Service

This is just fantastic. Anji mentioned this to me the other day and I decided to look it up this morning. What's next? The draft.

I find it interesting that we only need to dip into the reserve during times in which the Republicans are in office.

This is shaping up to a "pissed off at the state of the country day" as Anji and I are planning to go see Fahrenheit 9/11 this morning.

Coach K talking to the Lakers? - www.ezboard.com

The Bay Area

San Francisco - Part One (A Multi Part Rant)

San Francisco is a city that I have always wanted to visit. I grew up enjoying the Athletics and the Giants. The first World Series that I really remember in detail is the 1989 series between the A’s and Giants – the series with the earthquake. I used to root for the Bash Brothers, Dave Stewart’s stare and Carney Lansford picking it at 3B. I remember watching Will Clark frown, Kevin Mitchell catching the ball barehanded and the signing of Barry Bonds. I have wanted to experience the Bay Area for as long as I can remember. After spending just under 12 hours in the Bay Area I can safely come to one crystal clear conclusion:

I DO NOT LIKE IT.

In all fairness, I should state that I am in a bad mood. The question of the morning is:

“Am I in a bad mood because this trip is no fun or is this trip no fun because I am in a bad mood?”

Where to start?

Basically, thus far this trip has been under whelming on multiple levels. For instance, I am typing this update on Microsoft Word because the “free” internet connection isn’t working. We’ve called the third part tech support twice and they are still “trouble shooting.” (Troubleshooting is apparently tech speak for “we don’t know what the hell is going on so we will see what we can do.” Apparently, someone is piggy backing off of the hotel’s wi-fi and they tried to do so via our machine. As a result, our login has been disabled and our IP logged as “being in use.” Good times.

Now sure, you could argue that I am in one of the countries most beautiful cities and that rather than sit in the hotel room on the internet that I should be out, roaming around exploring the Streets of San Francisco. Well, I ain’t Michael Douglas and the only streets I want to explore are the ones that lead to the airport.

Anji has just left for her seminar and I am here in the Orchard Hotel waiting for some fellow tech geek to call and tell me that I can access the internet. Thank God I have the soothing sounds of Saved by the Bell in the background or else I might be quite irritable. Ugh.

Last night, upon checking into what was at first glance a very nice hotel (more to follow on that) we had tickets to the Oakland Athletics/Anaheim Angels game in Oakland. After a nice mile jog to the BART station, we were on our way…to HELL.

The Network Coliseum is a decent enough park. It is easily the worst ball park I have been to in terms of the stadiums that are still active, (Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium was worse) but it wasn’t awful. If you could pick up the stadium and move it to another part of the world it would be fantastic – but I didn’t much care for the Oakland area. I found it to be a little – how should I say…scary? There is nothing like walking through a steel cage to get to the game.

I am thrilled that I was able to purchase a t-shirt of one of my favorite baseball players (Mark Mulder) and I also managed to purchase an inflatable Oakland A’s baseball bat for Grace and an Athletics elephant bobblehead magnet. Our new thing is going to be getting a HUGE United States Map and putting magnets on for all the different places we have been. I think it will be kind of interesting. (In a lame, too much time on my hands kind of way.)

After the game we returned to the hotel to have a late dinner and watch some TV. We ordered a Black Angus burger from room service. Here is the description of that burger straight from the menu:

Ground USDA Black Angus Chuck Burger
Hand Cut French Fries, Tomato, Lettuce, Onion and Pickles
10.00

The burger came about 20 minutes later. Guess what key ingredient was on the burger? CHEESE. Now, we didn’t think to ask them to hold the cheese because nothing about that description indicates that there would be cheese on it. NOTHING. We call back down to room service to ask them to bring us one with no cheese and the response is: “Can’t you just take it off?”

Wrong answer, Moron. I didn’t pay $10.00 for a burger so I could scrape off the melted cheese and hope that I don’t get sick from eating it. After some unnecessary coercing we convinced him to bring us a new one.

The burger came about 15 minute later. It was awful. The one shining light – the fries were fantastic.

All in all - the hotel is pretty nice. I am a lot more generous is making that statement than I would be if I had actually forked over the money to pay for it. However, it’s a larger than usual room for a boutique area and I suppose that if I were interested in exploring the streets of SF than it would be in a fantastic location.
